What is blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is a plastic surgery operation designed to correct the signs of ageing in the eyes. To do this, it focuses on reducing excess fat and skin, which are generally characterised by drooping eyelids and bags under the eyes.
There are two types of blepharoplasty:
- Upper blepharoplasty: this corrects the sagging tissues of the upper eyelid. The operation consists of removing excess skin and, if necessary, lifting the lacrimal gland.
- Lower blepharoplasty: often longer and more complex, this operation removes the fatty deposits under the eyes, while reducing any excess skin.
Depending on your needs, it is possible to correct only the lower eyelids, the upper eyelids or all four at once.
In either case, blepharoplasty is a relatively simple operation, with very few risks and lasting results.
Who can have blepharoplasty?

The pre-operative consultation
Before the operation, you will have an initial visit with the surgeon to carry out a pre-operative check-up. The surgeon will first assess your wishes and motivations, and then ask about any medical and surgical history you may have.
The surgeon will then carry out a detailed examination of your eyelids in order to establish a diagnosis and prepare for the forthcoming operation.
He will also prescribe a full ophthalmological examination to check eye pressure, visual acuity and any other data that could have an impact on the smooth running of the operation.
A few days or weeks before the operation, you should follow a few instructions: for example, you shouldavoid taking certain medicines such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
It is also advisable tostop smoking one month before the operation, as smoking can impair your ability to heal.
The operation
Blepharoplasty is a relatively quick operation: it generally takes between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the technique used and the number of eyelids to be treated (upper, lower or all four at once).
Most of the time, the operation is carried out under local anaesthetic and on an outpatient basis, allowing the patient to leave the clinic the same evening.
For upper blepharoplasty, an incision is made in the upper palpebral crease, located between the fixed and mobile parts of the eyelid. The surgeon then removes the excess skin and fat, and stitches with non-absorbable sutures, which must be removed after a few days.
For lower blepharoplasty, the incisions made are transconjunctival: they are placed inside the eyelids (in the conjunctival mucosa) and therefore leave no scar on the skin. Fatty deposits are then removed, as well as any excess skin.
Blepharoplasty can be combined with other facial enhancement procedures:
- A temporal lift, to raise the outer part of the eyebrow;
- A centrofacial lift, to rejuvenate the central part of the face (dark circles, cheekbones and nasolabial folds);
- A forehead lift, to remove wrinkles from the forehead.
Post-operative follow-up
Blepharoplasty is a relatively simple operation, with a rapid recovery. Most patients feel no pain following the operation, apart from a little discomfort and a sensation of “dry eyes”.
During the first few days, it is advisable to apply an ice pack to the eyes to reduce swelling. Bruising may also appear, but will disappear spontaneously after one or two weeks.
You will be able to resume your professional activities after the sutures have been removed (4 or 5 days after the operation), and then sporting activities after 2 weeks.
The final results of blepharoplasty are generally visible about 6 months after the operation, and remain stable for about ten years.
