What is a breast lifting?

Mastopexy in Turkey is recommended for any patient who is bothered by the sensation of loss of shape and volume of her breasts. Sagging breasts or ptosis are part of the natural ageing process, but several factors influence the degree of sagging.

There are several types of ptosis, depending on their severity according to the Regnault classification published by Paula Regnault in 1976:

• Grade I – mild ptosis
• Grade II – moderate ptosis
• Grade III – advanced ptosis
• Grade IV – severe ptosis

Not recommended for breast lifting

Breast lifting in Istanbul or mastopexy surgery are not recommended for patients with underlying health problems such as heart problems and lung disease.

Patients must be in good physical health and maintain a stable weight. Patients suffering from obesity and diabetes are not good candidates for breast lifting surgery.

Overview of the procedure

Breast lifting, also known as mastopexy, performed in Turkey, is a type of mammoplasty in which a patient’s sagging breasts are lifted and firmed to a more aesthetically pleasing level. It can change the position, contour and size of a patient’s breasts.

Mastopexy also removes excess skin tissue, excess fatty tissue and tight ligaments from the patient’s chest, and the internal breast tissue is also reshaped by this procedure.

There are two main types of breast lifting. The types of breast lifting depend on whether the patient wishes to reduce or enlarge her breasts:

• Breast lift with augmentation usingbreast implants
• Breast lift with reduction

Preparation

Heavy smokers should be aware that smoking can have a detrimental effect on the body’s ability to heal and regenerate. If the patient is a smoker, she should stop smoking at least one month before going for the operation.

Patients may be advised to stop taking certain medicines such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, aspirin and medicines containing aspirin.

They may also be asked to stop taking naturopathic substances such as garlic, gingko and ginseng, as these can affect coagulation and anaesthesia during breast lift surgery.

The technique used for breast lift surgery depends on a number of factors:

• Breast shape
• Breast size
• The position of the areola
• The degree of breast ptosis
• The amount of extra skin to be removed

Once the Turkish cosmetic surgeon has decided on the technique to be used and the incision points, the patient is given an anaesthetic or sedation. Once the appropriate incision has been created, the doctor can begin the breast lift procedure, which involves removing extra skin and lifting the breast tissue into the right place.

The breast tissue is reshaped, with the nipple repositioned higher on the chest wall. Larger areolas may also be reduced at this stage. The area is then wrapped in bandages, and the breast lift recovery period can officially begin.

Recovery time

The recovery period for a breast lift lasts a few weeks on average, during which time the patient must take certain precautions to ensure the success of the operation.

The clinic will provide the patient with a special medical bra. The medical bra must be worn throughout the breast lift recovery period. It is forbidden to sleep on the stomach during the recovery period, as this may have a negative effect on the result of the operation.

A small, thin tube may be placed temporarily under the skin to drain excess blood or fluid. Patients usually return to work and normal activities, such as sport, within one to two weeks.

Most post-operative side effects occur during the first week following breast lift surgery.

Complications of breast lift surgery can include:

• Infection
• Bleeding
• Swelling, bruising and pain
• Asymmetry scars
• Decreased sensitivity of the nipples
• Allergic reactions

Side effects

Patients may experience pain, discomfort, swelling and loss of sensation in the nipples after the operation. Scars will usually be red at first, then purple, fading to pale after 12 to 18 months. Side effects after breast lift surgery are most significant for the first 4 days, but gradually diminish.

Nipple sensitivity generally returns to normal after about 6 weeks to 6 months.

The average success rate based on examinations of patients who have undergone mastopexy surgery is 94.2%.

Before and after

The results of mastopexy (breast lift) surgery are visible immediately, but the final results of breast lift surgery will appear slowly over the course of a few months. Swelling may take several months to subside. The results of mastopexy are long-lasting, but the patient’s breasts will continue to change over time. The patient should adopt a healthy and active lifestyle in order to maintain a renewed and rejuvenated appearance after the operation.

Do I need mastopexy surgery if I plan to have children?
Mastopexy does not interfere with breastfeeding. In rare cases, nerves or ducts may be damaged during the operation and this may lead to a reduction in milk production. Pregnancy can affect the timing of a breast lift, as the whole pregnancy process has varying effects on the appearance or function of the breasts. If you are planning to have a baby, it is best to delay the breast lift operation.

Will mastopexy surgery change the size of my breasts?
Breast lift surgery alone will not significantly change breast size. However, patients can opt for a breast lift with breast augmentation or a breast lift with reduction to achieve the desired result.
