What is a canthoplasty?

This cosmetic surgery in Turkey is recommended for patients with excessive, loose or wrinkled skin on the upper or lower eyelids. The procedure is also recommended for patients who have swollen pockets of fat in the lower eyelids that create a tired or aged appearance and who have puffy lower eyelids or simply for patients who wish to rejuvenate their appearance.

Overview of the procedure

Canthoplasty surgery, also known as canthopexy or eyelid lift surgery, is a type of aesthetic procedure generally performed to erase wrinkles under the eye and improve the aesthetic appearance of the eye area. The definitions of these operations referring to the eyelids can sometimes interfere with each other: epicanthoplasty or medial canthoplasty is another surgical procedure that enlarges the eye horizontally, is performed at the inner corner of the eye, while lateral canthoplasty enlarges the outer edge of the eye.

Canthoplasty is used to correct sagging, or puffiness, of the lower eyelids. Some people may be born with lower eyelid sagging, but the natural ageing process can also cause lower eyelid sagging – the skin becomes less elastic after a certain age, and small bags begin to develop under the lower eyelids. Sun exposure can also cause lower eyelids to sag. This gives patients a tired expression.

The primary objective of canthoplasty is to eliminate all bags under the eye and remove fatigue from the patient’s face, while giving them a younger, fresher expression.

Preparation

As well as stopping smoking, oral supplements, herbal teas and anticoagulants such as aspirin should be avoided for at least two weeks before a canthoplasty operation. Alcohol consumption is prohibited for at least 48 hours before and after the lower eye lift operation.

How it is performed

Canthoplasty surgery can be performed under local anaesthetic with sedation or under general anaesthetic. Surgeons discuss these options with the patient and decide on the most appropriate approach depending on the patient’s condition.

Once the patient has been anaesthetised, the surgeon begins to mark the incision points. The incisions are generally made in the corner of the eye so that the scars can be hidden.

A thin plastic shield is used to protect the patient’s eyeball. The canthoplasty operation varies from patient to patient, but is generally cut through the lower canthal tendon, repositioned and tightened to achieve a more pleasing appearance. Once the operation is complete, the plastic shield is removed and the incisions carefully closed. Dressings are applied to the operated area to prevent infection.

Recovery

The recovery period from canthoplasty surgery generally lasts around 2 weeks. If normal stitches are used, they will be removed about a week after the operation. If soluble stitches are used, they do not need to be removed.

Approximately one week after blepharoplasty in Turkey, patients can return to work and their normal activities. Eye drops can be used to keep the eyes moist. Patients will be given a special type of gel that can be used to keep the eye area clean.

Make-up should be avoided for at least a week after the canthoplasty operation. Patients can also use cold compresses to help reduce swelling during the canthoplasty recovery period.

Before and after

The results of the procedure are visible immediately. After a canthoplasty operation, patients can enjoy a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance. The patient’s eyes will be larger, and any sagging or drooping will be a thing of the past. These results usually last between 10 and 15 years. Some patients prefer revision surgery to erase the effects of ageing during or after this period.
