What is a Lumineers dental veneer?

Lumineers is a big name in the field of veneers and has gained a reputation thanks to its marketing efforts and the quality of the product it offers.

The beauty of Lumineers veneers is that they can be bonded to the surface of the tooth, rather like a false nail. The tooth does not need to be ‘prepared’ – i.e. the enamel does not need to be removed – in order to place the veneer. Enthusiastic patients think it’s the gold standard in veneers, and ask for Lumineers by name.

However, not all patients are good candidates for Lumineers. In my experience, one in ten patients are candidates for no-prep veneers and six in ten patients are candidates for minimal-prep veneers.

Who is a good candidate for Lumineers?

No-prep and minimal-prep veneers are only suitable for patients with healthy teeth who need to add volume to their smile. This may include patients who have had a tooth extraction or who have noticeable gaps between their teeth.

Veneers are an additive procedure, and even the thinnest veneers will add volume to the tooth. Because Lumineers require little or no preparation, adding them to an already full smile will give a voluminous aesthetic. This can look unnatural and give rise to the Hollywood smile that many people try to avoid.

Can I improve my smile without Lumineers?

When I see patients interested in Lumineers, it’s not so much that they want Lumineers. Rather, they want to improve their smile through cosmetic dentistry. Lumineers are just the name they know.

DURAthin veneers are another brand that we often use in our practice for no-prep and minimal-prep veneers. In my experience, DURAthin veneers offer a more natural smile with the same benefits as Lumineers veneers.

For patients with cavities and decay who are not candidates for minimal preparation veneers, we can also enhance the smile with other cosmetic procedures. A combination of crowns and veneers can be placed to offer the same aesthetic as Lumineers, with the added strength of a more complex cosmetic procedure.

However, if you have not yet reached the stage of terminal dentition, a one-day smile is not recommended. There are many other options to explore before you get there, which will allow a more predictable course of treatment and better results.
