What are dental veneers?
Dental veneers are thin ceramic or composite films or shells that are placed on the outside of the teeth. They are generally about 0.5 mm thick. These veneers can be applied to incisors and canines, or even premolars. Dental veneers correct the appearance of visible teeth, masking their appearance, position or colour.
It’s an aesthetic solution that’s easy to apply and less expensive than implants or crowns. Without requiring invasive surgery, veneers provide long-lasting results. Although they do not replace orthodontic or prosthetic treatment, they do harmonise the smile over the long term. You’ll have the smile you’ve been dreaming of for years to come.
Benefits of dental veneers
Dental veneers improve the appearance of your teeth by offering a number of advantages:
- They are less expensive than other dental devices;
- They are not an invasive procedure;
- They preserve tooth enamel and do not require the removal of much tooth enamel, which reduces the risk of periodontal disease;
- They are made to measure, so they are comfortable to wear;
- They are long-lasting.
The different types of dental veneers
There are different types of dental veneers, depending mainly on the materials used.
Composite dental veneers
Composite dental veneers are made from tooth-coloured resin. Unlike ceramic veneers, these veneers do not require any special preparation of the teeth. They can be fitted using two techniques:
- Direct application, when the veneer is made directly at the dentist’s, in your mouth;
- Indirect application, in which the veneers are made by a dental technician after moulding, as with ceramic veneers.
Composite veneers are less expensive than ceramic veneers, but their colour is more unstable and they are slightly less solid.
Ceramic dental veneers
These are thin shells that cover the outside of the teeth to correct their shape or colour. These veneers are bonded to existing teeth to correct the patient’s smile.
Among ceramic veneers, Lumineers and Glamsmile veneers have been widely used for around 30 years and have built up an excellent reputation. These are very thin, pellicular ceramic veneers, no more than 0.3 mm thick.

They are also extremely strong and can last for more than 20 years. However, they take a little longer to machine. What’s more, they can only be offered to patients whose teeth have only slight defects, with no deformation or overlap.
Who are dental veneers designed for?
Dental veneers are a very popular aesthetic treatment that addresses a number of different issues:
- Changing the colour of teeth that may be stained or yellowed.
- Changing the shape of teeth. Incisors or canines may be too short or too small.
- Masking misaligned teeth or teeth with uneven spaces between them.
However, dental veneers are not recommended for people who :
- suffer from bruxism or periodontal diseases such as gingivitis or periodontitis.
- have damaged or badly positioned teeth.
- have enamel deficiency.
In short, dental veneers are suitable for people who want to harmonise their smile, restore a whiter shade or correct minor defects in their visible teeth.
The Hollywood Smile is a reference to the perfect smile of film stars. This ideal of beauty can be achieved with dental veneers.
How are dental veneers applied?
The dentist will carry out a thorough examination of your teeth to ensure that you have good oral hygiene.
During the first session, the dentist prepares the teeth. To do this, he reduces the thickness of the enamel and files the surface of the teeth that will receive the veneers. A veneer is only about 0.5 mm thick.
Next, the dentist will take a photograph of your smile and X-ray your teeth. He will also take impressions of your teeth, which he will send to the prosthetic laboratory, which will make the veneers to measure.
A few weeks later, the dentist will apply the veneers. The dentist uses dental adhesive and a polymerising lamp. This stage is generally carried out under local anaesthetic. It is not painful, but can be uncomfortable because it takes a long time. It takes between 30 and 60 minutes for each tooth. Three or four sessions may therefore be necessary to obtain your new smile.
If you have chosen composite veneers applied directly to your teeth, only one session is needed as the dentist can apply them directly, without dental moulds.
What precautions should I take after applying dental veneers?
To maximise the lifespan of your dental veneers, you need to take impeccable care of your mouth. In particular, you should brush your teeth at least twice a day using a soft toothbrush and toothpaste containing fluoride.
It is also advisable to use dental floss or an interdental brush daily to clean the spaces between the teeth.
How much do dental veneers cost in Spain?
In Spain, the unit price of a composite dental veneer is €380, a ceramic veneer €480 and a Lumineers veneer €750. This price includes the dentist’s fee for fitting dental veneers, anaesthetic products and medication.
