What is an Emax ceramic crown?
Dental crowns are fixed prosthetic restorations that are attached to gums or specially prepared (ground) implants. The dental crown has the anatomical shape of a real tooth and enables chewing and speaking functions to be restored.
Types of dental crowns in Turkey
The range of materials and technologies used in the manufacture of modern dental crowns is quite broad, so we list the most popular options below.
1 – Solid metal crowns. Solid metal crowns are very durable. They are a perfect option for restoring the chewing function of molars. They are made of a cobalt-chromium metal alloy, sometimes with a coating of precious metals and gold.
A metal crown is one of the most affordable prosthetic options. The main disadvantage of this type of crown is their poor aesthetics, which is why they are not recommended for incisors and teeth in a smile line.
2 – Zirconia crowns are the latest development in the dental prosthesis industry, widely used by dental specialists and surgeons in Turkey. They are made up of two elements: a zirconia core and an outer layer of porcelain enamel. This structure makes the crown very durable and attractive.
To make the crown, the Turkish dentist first creates a 3D model of the patient’s jaws, and then makes a model of the prosthesis itself. Using these models, a milling machine sculpts the required structure from a zirconium billet.
In this way, all possible inaccuracies in prosthetics are ruled out: the crown perfectly reproduces the shape and size of a natural tooth and rests firmly on the gums and the tooth itself.
3 – Porcelain crowns are orthopaedic, non-metallic constructions made of pressed ceramic, which makes them extremely durable. Porcelain crowns are known for their excellent aesthetics and are almost identical to natural enamel, which is why they can be easily fitted even on front teeth.
4 – E-Max crowns. The composition of E-Max crowns does not contain any metal, but in terms of durability, these crowns are no inferior to steel prostheses and are capable of withstanding heavy chewing loads.
E-Max crowns are made from lithium disilicate – a fully biocompatible, easily tintable material that refracts and reflects light just like natural tooth enamel. As a result, even under bright light, non-metallic ceramics look very natural.
E-Max ceramic crowns can replace more than 60% of missing or damaged teeth. Thanks to this technology, dental treatment in Turkey can restore one or more teeth in succession. In the latter case, dental bridges will have to be used.
When do we need dental crowns?
Dental crowns are the type of dental prosthesis used when a cracked or partially broken tooth cannot be restored by less invasive methods such as sealing or the use of ceramic fillings.
Common indications for the use of dental crowns usually include severe tooth destruction and the loss of one or more teeth (in this case, a crown can only be used if the teeth still have roots). Dental crowns can also be used to achieve an aesthetic effect in the case of pronounced defects (anomalies), as well as to change the colour, shape and position of a tooth.

How are dental crowns fitted in Turkey?
- Medical examination. Like most other medical procedures, the fitting of dental crowns begins with a medical examination during which the Turkish dentist draws up a treatment plan, takes note of any contraindications the patient may have, gives recommendations for choosing the type of crown. The dentist takes an X-ray and assesses the condition of the oral cavity: if there is any disease, the patient will have to treat the gums and any diseased teeth, as well as removing tartar and plaque before fitting dental crowns.
- Tooth preparation. This involves removing the nerve (not always necessary for chewing teeth), filling the root canal and grinding the tooth to prepare for the crown. Grinding takes no less than an hour – the dentist removes the surface of the tooth tissue layer by layer, giving it the right shape for the prosthesis.
- Making a crown. Once the tooth preparation procedure is complete, the orthopaedic dentist takes an impression of the tooth, which will be used to make a crown. For non-metallic prostheses (e.g. made of zirconium dioxide), dentists use CAD/CAM scans (3D digital intra-oral scanning technology) instead of traditional wax casts, and the results of these scans are immediately transferred to the dental crown-making machine. This ensures that the size and shape of the product are as accurate as possible, guaranteeing that the prosthesis fits the tooth perfectly.
- Crown fitting. Next, we move on to the most critical part: fitting the crown. If it is exactly the right size, covers the tooth well and causes no inconvenience to the patient, it is fixed to the tooth with a special cement. Sometimes, dentists opt for a two-stage fixing process – initially, they fit a prosthesis for a while and examine the result, then, after a few weeks, if all goes well, the crown can finally be fixed.
The total duration of all the stages of the prosthesis is from five days to several weeks – it depends on the initial state of the patient’s oral cavity and the complexity of the crown-making process
For the duration of treatment at dental clinics in Turkey (Istanbul), we offer our patients temporary plastic crowns, which are then replaced by permanent crowns.
It’s also worth mentioning that any manipulation of the tooth during a prosthetic procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, so patients never experience any painful sensations.
