What you need to know about eyelid surgery in Turkey

Eyelid surgery in Turkey, also known as blepharoplasty, is plastic surgery in Turkey to correct eyelid defects or to improve the appearance of the eye area of the face. This procedure is mainly performed for aesthetic reasons to give a person a younger, more alert appearance.

However, in some cases it can also improve vision in people whose upper eyelids droop and obstruct their field of vision.

What does the procedure involve?

You will probably be given a local anaesthetic injected around the eye and oral sedation to help you relax during the operation. If you are having both upper and lower eyelid surgery, your surgeon will usually work on the upper eyelids first.

He or she first makes incisions along the crease of the eyelid, then removes excess skin, fat and muscle, and closes the incisions with stitches. Once the upper eyelid is complete, he will work on the lower eyelid by making an incision under the lower eyelashes, then removing excess skin and muscle, and closing the incision.

How long will I have to stay in Turkey?

Eyelid surgery in Turkey is usually performed on an outpatient basis, so you should be allowed to leave hospital the same day. If you use contact lenses, do not wear them for at least two weeks after the operation. Your doctor will probably give you a precise recovery schedule.

Post-operative follow-up

Strictly follow the post-operative instructions given by your Turkish surgeon, which may include wound care and restrictions (avoid smoking, second-hand cigarettes and rubbing your eyes). During your recovery in Istanbul, gently clean your eyelids and use eye drops or ointments as prescribed.

To protect the skin on your eyelids from the sun and wind, always wear dark sunglasses when you go outdoors.
