What is a gum graft?
If gum recession is affecting your health or appearance, a procedure called a gum graft may be recommended. Although it may sound frightening, various gum grafting procedures are routinely performed by periodontists (gum tissue specialists) and some general dentists who have undergone specialist training in this area.
Gum grafting in Tunisia involves carefully placing a small amount of new tissue in an area where there is little or no gum tissue.
This procedure is generally recommended to prevent further gum recession or to cover the exposed root surfaces of your teeth.
The tissue used in this procedure can come from a variety of sources, but is usually taken from the roof of the mouth, after the area has been anaesthetised for your comfort. It is then gently sutured in place, using suture material that can be thinner than a human hair.
Your body’s natural recovery process takes over once the grafting procedure is complete. During this time, new blood vessels develop in the graft and help it integrate with the surrounding tissue.
A successful graft can reduce or eliminate problems such as tooth sensitivity and gum recession, while improving the aesthetics of your smile.
How do you know if you need a gum graft? Often you can clearly see or feel the problem. Exposed roots can make your teeth look too “long”, and they usually appear a little darker than your pearly white crowns.
Gum recession is a problem that can worsen with age, as we recognise when we hear the phrase “long teeth”. But the potential problems of gum recession aren’t just cosmetic – they can also have a serious impact on your oral health.
A closer look at your gums
Inside your mouth, gum tissue forms a barrier that resists the vigorous mechanical (and microbial) effects of eating, chewing and biting. Gums can start to recede, or shrink, for a number of reasons.
The first is ineffective oral hygiene: both inadequate brushing, which fails to remove plaque, and excessive brushing, which erodes the tissues. Foreign objects in the mouth that rub against the gums, such as ill-fitting removable dentures, linguettes or even nails, can also contribute to gum recession.
When tooth roots lose the protection of healthy gum tissue, they can become extremely sensitive to hot or cold temperatures, causing pain when you eat and drink a lot. Worse still, the absence of gum tissue makes it easier for bacteria to penetrate the roots and cause cavities, or minor trauma can lead to rapid gum recession. In both cases, the end result can be tooth loss. That’s why proper treatment of gum recession is so important.
Treatment of gingival recession with gingival grafts
After a thorough examination and assessment of your teeth, gums and general health, a gum grafting procedure may be recommended.
The tissue used in this procedure can be obtained from a variety of sources: an area adjacent to the area of recession, the hard palate, or tissue donated by another person, which has been medically treated so that it can be used safely.
There are several different methods of grafting. For example, if you have lost gum tissue in an area of your mouth that is not very visible when you speak or smile, it is possible to place additional gum tissue in that area to prevent further recession without trying to completely cover the surface of the tooth root.
This procedure is called “free gingival grafting” (as the tissue is separated from its blood supply), and takes around 45 minutes to complete. It is highly predictable and has a very high success rate. If the aim is to cover the root surfaces, the procedure becomes more complicated and takes longer, but it remains highly effective.
Grafting procedures in Tunisia are usually performed under local anaesthetic, and are generally painless. You should feel very little discomfort after the procedure, even if tissue has been taken from your palate, as the donor area is usually covered with a soothing liquid material, similar to a dressing.
Fortunately, any discomfort can be alleviated by over-the-counter or prescription anti-inflammatory medication, and is usually short-lived.
A gentle diet (and an antibiotic) may also be recommended for a week or so after the procedure, to allow the tissues to heal completely; otherwise, your normal activities will not be restricted.
Keep your gums healthy
After a gum graft in Tunisia, it’s more important than ever to maintain good oral hygiene, to avoid gum problems developing in the future. Your regime should include proper brushing with fluoride toothpaste, daily flossing, a healthy diet and regular dental and periodontal check-ups. Maintaining healthy gums is a key part of your overall oral health, and the preservation of your smile.
