What is an Afro hair transplant?
First of all, Afro hair transplants are becoming increasingly popular.Hair transplantation in Turkey is a simple process that involves transplanting hair from a donor area to a recipient area. The methods used are FUT (follicular unit transplant) and FUE (follicular unit extraction). Afro men and women with frizzy hair can undergo a hair transplant.
Afro hair transplantation is a solution for those suffering from hair loss due to traction alopecia. Afro hair follicles are harvested from donor areas, usually at the back of the scalp, and then carefully implanted into the recipient area to restore the hairline.
This technique restores a dense, natural hairline, restoring self-confidence and improving aesthetic appearance.
FUT or FUE afro hair transplantation?
First of all, there are two options for frizzy hair transplants – FUE and FUT. However, not all cases are suitable for the FUE procedure. Why do I say this? First, think about the shape of your hair.
Afro hair is very curly above the skin. It’s also just as likely to be curly under the skin. The FUE procedure uses a straight extraction device that penetrates the skin and dislodges the hair follicle unit.
Curly hair is likely to be damaged during the FUE procedure. However, this is not always the case. FUE and FUT are both options for many.
Every patient is different and we won’t know which option is best for you until we see you in person. So give us a call and we can arrange a free consultation. We can also arrange a face-to-face discussion at a time to suit you.
Information about FUE and FUT
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) may be your best option. You may wish to consider the following points:
- Only a qualified surgeon can undertake the FUT procedure. Any qualified doctor (GP for example) can perform the FUE procedure.
- Some clinics will “take the risk”, knowing that you will have signed to say that you are aware that the grafts may not grow.
- The FUE procedure requires us to completely shave the donor area. In other words, the entire back of the head.
- Linear scarring in the case of FUT
- Recovery time tends to be longer.
- FUE leaves very few visible scars and is less traumatic for the patient.
Getting started
You arrive at the clinic. Remember not to drink alcohol for a week before the operation. You’ve been advised to make sure you’ve had something for breakfast. If not, we will go and get you something.
Afterwards, we will have a final medical check-up, review the procedure and answer any questions you may have. This will be done with the doctor. Once everything is finished, we can start. So this is an FUT procedure. People with HIV are eligible.

Preparing the donor area
First of all, we need to decide on the size of the donor strip. This is the piece of skin that will be taken from the scalp. The surgeon will decide on the approximate quantity of grafts needed and then examine the density. Once this stage has been completed, the size of the strip can be accurately estimated.
In addition, once the area has been shaved, it must be washed. A frizzy hair transplant in Turkey is a so-called clean and non-sterile procedure. This means that you are not sedated but under local anaesthetic. It’s a bit like going to the dentist, but you’ll be there for a few hours.
The clinic is cleaned to a high standard and all instruments are sterile and single-use. Once the area has been cleaned with a sterilising solution, you’re ready for the injections.
Local anaesthetic
I’m sure that, like most people, you’re worried about the injections and whether they’re going to hurt. I’m not going to lie to you and tell you that you won’t feel a thing. Most patients just sit and it doesn’t bother them.
Some feel them more than others, but I would add that they are over quickly. Also, once the procedure is over, you won’t feel anything for the rest of the procedure.
So how many injections are needed? That depends on the size of the strip or donor area and the recipient area. Each injection only takes a few seconds.
Some patients are very anxious about the injections. The doctor may give you something to relax you.
Collecting the strip
First of all, the removal of the strip can and should only be carried out by a qualified surgeon. A doctor (not a surgeon) can therefore perform an FUE (follicular hair extraction) procedure, but not an FUT (follicular hair transplant) procedure.
What’s more, you need a surgeon with a lot of experience in Afro hair transplantation to reduce the risk of scarring.
Taking the strip only takes a few minutes. The stitching that follows takes longer. Throughout the operation, you will feel no pain. Although you can hear what is happening.
Suturing the donor area
Suturing the donor area requires care and precision. First, the inner lining is joined, then the most superficial epidermal layer is closed to ensure a clean appearance and minimise the risk of keloid scars. This process takes time to ensure a finished look. The seams require an expert hand to ensure that they do not come undone.
Most importantly, the sutures must be performed by the surgeon.
There is no pain during this procedure. You may feel a slight “tugging” of the skin. Once the suturing is complete, the surgeon will move on to the incisions.

How long does an afro hair transplant in Istanbul last?
An Afro hair transplant in Turkey is as long-lasting as a conventional hair transplant. In principle, the results are permanent, with the implanted hair having the same lifespan as that of the donor area. However, after the age of 50, hair loss of around 10% is normal.
Is a curly hair transplant painful?
A curly hair transplant is performed under local anaesthetic. In fact, the operation is not painful. Only the administration of the anaesthetic can be a little uncomfortable. After the transplant, the discomfort is minimal, or even non-existent.

Yes, the result obtained with a frizzy hair transplant is definitive. This final result can be seen as early as 12 months after the operation. The transplanted hair will grow like its counterpart. Moreover, they are not affected by the hormone responsible for hair loss.
Does a textured hair transplant leave scars?
In most cases, the surgeon makes micro-incisions to remove the hair to be re-implanted. A healing cream is applied at the end of the operation. The scars caused are minimal and invisible in the hair. The FUE technique leaves no scars.
How long does it take to see the results of an afro transplant?
Afro hair implanted during a hair transplant starts to grow back after about 4 months. It takes 12 to 18 months for them to reach their final appearance and completely cover the area. They will then have reached their optimum density.
