What is hymenoplasty?

Hymenoplasty in Turkey is surgery to restore a ruptured hymen. The hymen is a symbol of purity in many cultures, while scientific evidence suggests that this thin membrane was intended to prevent infection of the vagina. Although a hymen is a sign of virginity, it can break for non-sexual reasons such as running, jumping or any other form of sporting activity; some women have even been born without a hymen!

Our 2 partner clinics are located in the European part of Istanbul. It is a 15-minute drive from the airport. All procedures are performed by gynaecologists and accompanied by anaesthetic experts.

Hymenoplasty can be performed in two ways:

  • If the remains of the hymen are present, they can be sewn back together.
  • The second option involves reconstructing a new hymen using tissue from the patient’s own body. As well as restoring the hymen, the vaginal walls can also be tightened. This operation will repair the hymen, but you will experience bleeding and discomfort the next time it breaks.

Although many conservative societies insist on a virgin bride, this procedure has gained huge popularity in less conservative societies such as the USA and Europe.

How does hymenoplasty work in Turkey?

First of all, you will need to schedule a consultation with the gynaecologist to discuss the operation and tell him or her your expectations clearly and precisely. The doctor will give you an overview of the operation and instructions on how to prepare for hymenoplasty in Turkey.

The basic technique – If any remnants of the hymen remain, it can be sewn back together. A local or sometimes general anaesthetic will be administered to prevent pain and discomfort. The surgeon will then sew the torn parts together – the stitches are dissolvable. The procedure takes around 30 to 40 minutes and is generally performed on an outpatient basis.

The alloplant technique – This technique is used when the remains cannot be sewn back together. The surgeon inserts a biomaterial into the vagina and this material acts as the hymen. This procedure takes about two hours and you will be under local anaesthetic.

Hymen reconstruction – In this procedure, the surgeon will create a new hymen using tissue from the lip of the vagina. However, this method requires you to abstain from sexual intercourse for at least three months.

Who should undergo hymenoplasty in Turkey?

In general, women request hymenoplasty for cultural and religious reasons. In most cases, the woman has lost her virginity during sexual intercourse and wishes to restore it before marriage. In some cases, the girl may have lost her hymen through non-sexual activity, but again, because of religious or social norms, they find it imperative to repair the hymen.

Ideal candidates

  • Those who have suffered a hymen rupture due to sexual intercourse or other activities.
  • Women over the age of 18.
  • Women who are in good health and do not suffer from any serious illnesses.

A gynaecological examination is also required to determine whether or not your hymen can be restored.

Who is not eligible?

If the woman suffers from cancer of the genitals or a venereal disease, only then is she ineligible for treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Potential side effects of hymenoplasty in Turkey include:

  • Swelling and pain
  • Post-operative bruising
  • Haematomas and bleeding
  • Discolouration of the hymen
  • Numbness

These are minor side effects, however, and the medical team will take every precaution to avoid them.

Post-operative follow-up

The patient will be observed for a few hours in the recovery room after the treatment and if no complications are noted, she will be discharged. The patient can return to work after 3 to 4 days. However, it is advisable to start moderate activities only after 10 days.

You will need to keep the area clean and take antibiotics to prevent infection. You should use warm compresses and ice packs to relieve pain and swelling. You will be able to take a bath 2 to 3 days after the operation. You should abstain from sexual intercourse for up to 8 weeks after the operation.

It takes about 4 to 6 weeks to heal completely.
