What is Double Donation IVF?
Double donation IVF is IVF in which the embryos come from donated oocytes and donated sperm. Embryo donation is a form of third-party reproduction in which unused embryos remaining after an individual’s or couple’s in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment are donated to another individual or couple. IVF often creates an excess of fertilised eggs (embryos), which a person or couple may choose to cryopreserve for future frozen embryo transfers if the initial treatment was unsuccessful or to expand a family. However, once a family is complete, frozen embryos can remain.
The options for these embryos are as follows:
- Remain cryopreserved indefinitely
- Donate the embryos to research
- Donate the embryos to another individual or couple
If the embryos are donated to another individual or couple, the donor couple is giving another person the opportunity to experience pregnancy and the birth of a child. The donor embryo(s) will be transferred to the uterus with the hope that they will implant and enable a successful pregnancy. The resulting child is the embryo recipient – regardless of the genetic traits of the offspring that are those of the embryo donors.
Embryo donors receive no compensation, with the exception of certain expenses, such as any medical screening tests required.
Patients are usually screened for health problems prior to egg and sperm retrieval to create embryos, before undergoing the initial IVF treatment. To become embryo donors, donors may need to be re-screened at the time of embryo donation to minimise the likelihood of transmitting infectious diseases. Recipients of donor embryos must also undergo medical screening and tests.
Adoption of donor embryos
When an individual or couple chooses to use a donor embryo, this can be referred to as embryo adoption, which is a misnomer: under current legislation, true adoption only concerns the placement of a child in a family after birth.since the resulting children are born into a family, no adoption takes place.
The choice of embryo donation is similar to the choice of egg or sperm donation to start a family. Patients considering adoption may also be interested in donor embryo transfer as an alternative to the adoption process, which can sometimes be long, expensive and uncertain.
Success rates
Double embryo donation is a developing field. The success rate, measured as the number of live births per embryo transfer, depends on the quality of the embryo, the age of the egg donor, the number of embryos transferred and the stage of development of the embryo when frozen. According to CDC data, the rate of live births with embryo donation is between 43% and 45%.
