What is mammoplasty?

Mammoplasty in Turkey, also known as breast reduction, is a type of plastic surgery in Turkey aimed at reducing the size, volume and weight of the breasts. Breast size varies from one woman to another. It is determined by a woman’s hormones, genes and weight.

A breast size that is disproportionate to the body can lead to physical and psychological problems. Large, sagging breasts can lead to physical problems such as chronic back pain, neck pain, poor posture, skin irritation and excessive sweating, as well as emotional problems such as low self-esteem and dissatisfaction with the appearance of the breasts.

1. Incision

There are several different incision methods used for mammoplasty. There are three most common incision techniques used for breast reduction surgery:

• Anchor type (inverted T reduction): This technique involves an anchor-shaped incision that begins around the areola, descends vertically and then crosses horizontally across the breast crease.
• Circular pattern around the areola : This technique involves an incision around the areola in a circular pattern.
• Keyhole (snowshoe) pattern: This technique involves an incision around the areola and vertically down to the fold of the breast.

Your surgeon will choose the most appropriate incision method for mammoplasty, taking into account the size and shape of your breasts and the desired breast size.

2. Nipple repositioning and tissue removal

After the incisions, mammoplasty continues with the repositioning of the nipples (which remain attached to their original blood and nerve supply). The nipples and areola may be removed and repositioned on a higher part of the breasts (in the form of a skin graft) if the breasts are extremely large. Excess fat, breast tissue and skin are then removed.

3. Closing the incisions

Incisions are made close together to reshape and reduce the size of the breasts. To create and support the reshaped breasts, the surgeon places stitches deep in the breast tissue. Skin adhesives or surgical tape are used to suture/close the incisions. The incision lines are permanent, but they generally disappear or fade significantly in due course.
