Does penis enlargement really work?

Surgery remains the gold standard for penis enlargement and has been performed for over 30 years (and potentially even longer than that) on hundreds of thousands of men.

Despite this, there is an unprecedented amount of misinformation, mainly on the internet, as to whether it is an effective and safe surgical procedure.

Our medical view is that with modern operating techniques performed by experienced doctors, true penis enlargement is both possible and safe. Of course, as with any other type of operation, the result will depend on :

• The experience and skill of the surgeon;
• The surgical techniques used;
• Treatment expectations; and
• Post-operative care and the patient’s commitment to achieving the desired result.

Are the results permanent?

As long as you follow the post-operative instructions, the results of penis enlargement surgery ARE permanent for the vast majority of patients.

For length enhancement, the results you see immediately after the operation will actually improve over time if you follow our post-operative instructions.

For circumference augmentation with autologous fat injection, you should expect to retain around 60% of the gain you see immediately after the operation. There are two reasons for this:

• The penis will have swollen after the operation, so when the swelling goes down, some of the gain will disappear; and
• We know that some of the fat injected will be absorbed by the body – the amount unfortunately depends on the patient, but on average it won’t be more than 30-40%. The reason why some of the fat is reabsorbed is that the injected fat cells do not develop their own blood supply and therefore do not survive and become scar tissue. This is why post-operative care is very important, as it influences the amount of fat that will be absorbed. We should mention here that a good surgeon must take this into account when calculating the amount of fat that needs to be injected to obtain the desired result, after the absorption phase.

If I lose weight, will the injected fat disappear?

No. We have fat cells all over our bodies, but the body only stores and uses fat (in the case of weight loss) in specific places. The first place it does this is the liver, then the abdomen (for men). Unless you have lost almost all your body fat, it is very unlikely that weight loss will affect the result of your size increase.

How long does the operation last?

All our penis enlargement operations are day care and last between 1 and 2 hours. This means that the whole process (from admission to discharge from the clinic) takes around 6 hours, after which you can return to your home/home.

Do I need a general anaesthetic?

Yes – the operation is performed under general anaesthetic. However, this is nothing to worry about. Modern day surgery requires a light anaesthetic and as our operations are minimally invasive, it is very unlikely that there will be any problems.

In practice, you’ll be put to sleep just before the operation starts and woken up just after it’s over – so you’ll be under anaesthetic for around two hours in total.

How long do I have to stay in hospital?

After the operation, you will need to stay in hospital for 3-4 hours. During this time, you will be assisted by our nurse, you will eat something, you will be examined by your surgeon and you will be ready to go home. You will be able to walk and function normally, usually with very little pain or discomfort.

I’m travelling from abroad – how long do I need to stay for after my operation?

The day after your operation, you will have a follow-up consultation with your surgeon to check that all is well. After this, most patients can travel, but we recommend that you stay an extra day or two to have a more thorough follow-up with your surgeon over the next few days, but in most cases this is not necessary.

What do I need to do to prepare for the operation?

Virtually nothing – although it is advisable to follow a healthy lifestyle (in terms of diet, exercise, smoking and alcohol consumption) the month before, as this will help with recovery. In addition, you will receive detailed instructions on fasting, which you should follow 6 hours before the operation. However, if you have fallen ill or have any other recent health problems, be sure to inform your surgeon as soon as possible to assess whether the operation should be postponed to a later date. If there are other things you should do before the operation, the doctor will inform you of these during your consultation.

What should I do after the operation?

The day after your operation, you should attend a consultation with your surgeon, during which he or she will give you detailed post-operative instructions, change your medical dressing and answer any questions you may have.

From then until your next visit (usually a month later), your surgeon and our patient co-ordination team will be in close contact with you to ask for regular updates and address any concerns you may have.

Two weeks after your operation (unless otherwise stated), you will need to start post-operative rehabilitation, which involves stretching the penis and gently massaging the shaft of the penis every day (depending on the surgical technique used) – detailed instructions will be provided to you after the operation.

How long do I have to take off work to have the operation?

Most patients can return to work 2 to 3 days after their operation, provided it is an office job. If your job involves strenuous physical activity, you may need to be off work for a little longer.

How long after the operation can I resume sexual activity?

In general, sexual activity can be resumed after 4 to 6 weeks, unless your surgeon advises otherwise.

Will I feel any pain after the operation?

Discrete pain and discomfort are to be expected, but can be managed with over-the-counter oral analgesics. The same patients, particularly younger ones, may experience pain during erections for the first few days.
