What is a knee replacement?
Knee replacement, or knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace the weight-bearing surfaces of the knee joint in order to relieve pain and disability. The knee joint is replaced with an artificial joint made of metal alloys, plastics and polymers.
The different types of replacement
- Total knee replacement (TKR):
In a total knee replacement, the surgeon removes damaged cartilage and bone from the surface of the knee joint and replaces it with an artificial surface made of metal and plastic. - Partial knee arthroplasty (UKA):
In a partial knee replacement (unicompartmental knee arthroplasty), the surgeon replaces only part of your knee joint. The advantages of partial knee replacement include a smaller incision, shorter hospital stay, less blood loss, easier post-operative rehabilitation, lower risk of infection, blood clots and stiffness, and easier revision if necessary.
- Minimally invasive knee replacement surgery:
Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) uses specialised techniques and instruments to allow the surgeon to perform major surgery without a large incision.
Minimally invasive knee arthroplasty requires a smaller incision of 7 to 12 cm compared with the standard approach, which generally requires an incision of 20 to 30 cm.
Minimally invasive surgery can result in less pain, reduced recovery time and improved movement due to less scar tissue formation. - Revision Knee replacement surgery:
Knee revision surgery is performed to replace the replacement knee, once it has been worn out.
Revision surgery is generally more complicated and longer than the initial operation. There is no limit to the number of times you can have revision surgery, but it is widely accepted that the artificial knee joint becomes less effective each time it is replaced.
How long will the artificial knee last?
The artificial knee generally lasts between 15 and 20 years, depending on the type of joint used and the strain you put on your new knee.
