What is a septoplasty?
Septoplasty in Tunisia is a surgical procedure to correct a deviated septum inside the nose. A deviated septum is when the nasal septum (the bone and cartilage that divide your two nostrils in two) is off-centre or crooked. Some people are born with a deviated septum, while others suffer an injury that causes this problem.
The procedure is typically performed to address breathing problems, nosebleeds, or snoring in people with a deviated septum.
Sometimes septoplasty is performed at the same time as other procedures, such as sinus surgery or removal of a nasal tumour or polyp.
The septoplasty procedure
Before your septoplasty, you will receive either a local anaesthetic (the area will be numb) or a general anaesthetic (you will be unconscious).
The procedure generally lasts one to one-and-a-half hours.
The surgeon will make an incision inside the wall of the nose on one side, then lift the mucous membrane that covers it.
The cartilage or bone causing the problem will be moved or removed. The nasal septum will be straightened and repositioned in the middle of the nose.
The surgeon will then put your mucous membrane back in place. It will be held in place by stitches, splints or packing material (such as cotton wool).
Before septoplasty
- Before the septoplasty procedure, tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking.
- You may need to stop taking certain medicines beforehand, such as Advil (ibuprofen), Aleve (naproxen), aspirin or certain herbal supplements.
- Also tell your doctor if you have any allergies or a history of bleeding problems.
- You may have to stop eating and drinking the day before the operation. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.
After septoplasty
- You will probably be able to go home on the day of the operation. Make sure someone else drives you.
- After your septoplasty, your nose may be tightly packed (stuffed with cotton or spongy material) to prevent nosebleeds. The packing is usually removed 24 to 36 hours after the operation.
- You may experience some pain, nasal congestion or a slight runny nose after the operation. Your doctor will tell you what painkillers you can safely take.
- You may need to keep your head elevated while sleeping and refrain from blowing your nose for several weeks after the operation.
- Avoid strenuous activities, such as running or aerobics, until your doctor tells you it is safe to do so.
Risks of septoplasty
The potential risks of septoplasty are as follows:
- Excessive bleeding
- Scarring
- Infection
- Alteration of the shape of the nose
- Failure to improve symptoms or return of nasal obstruction (which may require further surgery).
- An opening in the wall of the septum
- Reduction in sense of smell
- Change in skin sensation
- Accumulation of fluid in the nose
