What is a septorhinoplasty?

Septorhinoplasty in Tunisia is a type of plastic surgery designed to correct and reconstruct the nasal septum (bridge) for aesthetic and medical purposes. This is the difference between rhinoseptoplasty and a simpler rhinoplasty (which aims solely to improve the aesthetics of the nose) or septoplasty (which corrects and reconstructs the nose solely for medical purposes). This procedure gives the best results when it comes to reshaping and slightly reconstructing the nose.

What is it used for?

From a strictly medical point of view, septorhinoplasty in Tunisia is generally performed to treat any problem related to a deviated septum. Other potential problems include

• breathing difficulties, caused by obstruction due to the deviated septum
• difficulty falling asleep
• dry mouth due to mouth breathing
• rhinorrhoea (frequent nosebleeds)

From an aesthetic point of view, any type of defect can be corrected; there are several types of aesthetic nose enhancement.

How does it work?

Before the operation, you will receive either a local anaesthetic or a general anaesthetic.

During the septoplasty phase, the surgeon will make an incision in your septum. If the remodelling is fairly straightforward, the surgeon will be able to reposition the septum without having to move it first. Otherwise, the surgeon will have to remove the septum, straighten it and replace it in the nose. The surgeon will then suture the nose.

Rhinoplasty can be a closed procedure (through an incision inside the nose) or an open procedure (through an incision at the base of the nose). After the operation, an external plaster cast will be placed over your nose, which will be removed less than a week after the procedure.

How can I prepare for the operation?

Before the operation, you should :

• Schedule a visit with the surgeon to discuss the operation, the results you expect and your medical history;
• Have an ECG, blood pressure, blood test and urine test;
• If you smoke, stop smoking and take anticoagulants and platelet aggregation inhibitors, to avoid any complications (such as epistaxis) during the operation.

Post-operative care

You will be hospitalised for one day after the operation. However, full recovery may take several months (from three months to a full year in some cases). It is quite common to feel some pain in the nose and to have a few nosebleeds in the week following the operation.

You should avoid smoking in the days following the operation. You should also avoid strenuous physical activity, keep your head up while you sleep and be careful not to blow your nose for some time after the operation.

You can return to work approximately one week after septorhinoplasty in Tunisia. The plastic surgeon will usually recommend periodic check-ups to monitor the recovery process.
