What is tooth whitening?

Do you want a brighter, more attractive smile? Then perhaps the best way to achieve it is to whiten your teeth in Turkey.

Most of us want beautiful, pearly white teeth. Of course, most people rely on teeth whitening products sold in pharmacies to remove natural yellowing or stains from their teeth. Unfortunately, these products are rarely effective. Professional teeth whitening in Turkey, on the other hand, is virtually guaranteed to whiten your teeth safely.

Is professional teeth whitening right for you? Read on to find out more about the procedure and the possible risks.

Who is tooth whitening in Turkey intended for?

Our teeth are not perfectly white, despite what the adverts for whitening toothpastes tell you. Some yellowing of the teeth is natural. However, some people may experience significant yellowing. Your teeth may actually become stained because of what you eat or drink.

In some cases, teeth can be naturally dark yellow. Your genetics and age also play a role in the beauty of your teeth.

Here are some factors that can lead to serious discolouration of your teeth:

  • Poor dental hygiene (not brushing regularly)
  • Constantly drinking beverages such as coffee, tea and red wine, which can stain teeth. Certain fruits such as apples can also stain your teeth.
  • Smoking tobacco
  • Certain medicines
  • Nerve damage in the roots

Good oral hygiene can prevent tooth discolouration. But if your teeth are already discoloured, you can improve their appearance by having them professionally whitened. This is a simple procedure carried out by a dentist who whitens the tops of your teeth to make them appear whiter.

Professional teeth whitening is not suitable for everyone. For example, if a tooth has nerve damage and is discoloured, a whitening procedure may not be useful. Also, if you whiten your teeth and continue to smoke, the positive effects will not last.

In the majority of cases, tooth whitening in Turkey, Istanbul by a well-known and reputable dentist can help you regain the pearly white smile you’ve always dreamed of. You can also get rid of the uneven colour of your teeth that is ruining your smile with this procedure.

What’s the difference between professional whitening and home whitening?

When there are countless teeth whitening products you can buy in a convenience store, why pay a dentist to do it? It’s a reasonable enough question. The main reason is that professional teeth whitening abroad, particularly in Turkey, is far more effective.

The teeth whitening procedure is essentially a whitening procedure. Teeth whitening products sold in supermarkets contain hydrogen peroxide, a whitening agent that removes stains from teeth.

Hydrogen peroxide, as you may already know, is a highly corrosive acid. It can damage enamel and gums if used in high concentrations.

That’s why over-the-counter teeth whitening products contain very low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide. These products won’t damage your gums, but they won’t remove much of the yellowing from your teeth either.

Dentists are allowed to use higher concentrations of whitening agents to make teeth appear much whiter. Dentists also use special pads to protect your gums during the procedure.

However, modern whitening procedures do not use liquid whitening agents at all. These days, dentists use a laser whitening process instead.

It should be noted that it is impossible to bleach dental implants.

The laser whitening process involves using a type of laser to remove stains from teeth after using a whitening agent. This procedure is less invasive and more effective. Laser teeth whitening cannot be done at home.

Only a professional dentist can perform it. In particular, our partner in Turkey specialises in dental care and does a remarkable job with patients.

In short, professional teeth whitening is safer and visibly more effective than at-home whitening. The procedure doesn’t take long either. You can have your teeth whitened in just one visit to the dentist.

Tooth whitening in Istanbul

Here are the basic steps of the professional teeth whitening procedure in Istanbul, Turkey.

Examination and screening

Before starting the procedure, the dentist will examine your teeth and gums. If you have gum disease or cavities, the dentist will recommend that you postpone the procedure until the serious problems have been treated.

The dentist will also check whether you are fit to undergo the procedure. Laser tooth whitening is not recommended for pregnant women. The procedure is not generally performed on teenagers either. If you are under 18, your dentist may recommend that you wait until you are a little older to undergo the procedure.

You must also have enough exposed tooth enamel to undergo the whitening procedure. If your gum line is uneven, your teeth may not whiten evenly, which can lead to an odd smile. Also, if your gums have receded, exposing the roots of your teeth, your dentist may not recommend whitening. The roots of your teeth do not respond to whitening, so only certain parts of your teeth will be whitened.

Don’t panic if you don’t qualify for professional teeth whitening. There are other alternatives you can consider, such as dental veneers in Turkey and luminaires. A veneer is a thin porcelain shell that can be bonded to your teeth to change their colour and shape. Lumineers are like veneers, but much thinner. Lumineers are suitable if your teeth are particularly sensitive.

It is rare that people cannot benefit from this procedure. Unless you are pregnant or young, you should do it. Once you are eligible, the Turkish dentist will move on to the next stage, as described below.

Pre-treat your teeth

Before laser whitening begins, the dentist will clean your teeth. This is usually done by a dental hygienist. The hygienist removes tartar and plague, if any remains, to fully prepare the enamel for the professional teeth whitening procedure.

The dental hygienist will also check that all your cavities are well filled. The enamel must not be damaged to the point of allowing the whitening agent to penetrate the inside of your teeth. If it does, the whitening solution will damage sensitive tissues and nerves.

Preparing for the procedure

The professional teeth whitening procedure is not painful. You do not need a local anaesthetic, as is the case for tooth extraction. However, in some patients, the laser whitening process may cause tooth sensitivity or perhaps minor inflammation.

For this reason, some dentists prescribe a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) before the procedure begins. You should inform the dentist if you are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter medication before taking the NSAID. Also inform the dentist of any allergies or sensitivities.

The whitening process

Once all the above steps have been completed, you can begin the teeth whitening process. The process is fairly quick. You will be asked to lie down in a dental chair. The dentist will use a mouth guard to keep your mouth open and your teeth exposed.

Before the process begins, the dentist will place a protective barrier over your gums. This will prevent the laser or whitening agent from touching the gums.

Next, the dentist applies a whitening solution in gel form to the enamel on the front of the teeth. This is usually done with a syringe. The whitening agent remains on the teeth.

The dentist then uses a laser. The laser light activates the whitening agent and can cause it to foam. The laser causes the whitening agent to release oxygen ions that remove stains from the enamel. The laser can be left on for up to 15 minutes for the chemical process to take effect.

The dentist turns off the laser and can then leave the whitening agent on your teeth for a few more minutes. The final step is to remove the whitening agent. Dentists usually use a tiny hoover to quickly and effectively remove the stained whitening agent without damaging the teeth or gums.

You will then be asked to rinse your mouth. When the dentist removes the gum shield, the procedure is complete.

Overall, the procedure usually takes between one and two hours. So it’s quick and you won’t have to wait long.

After the treatment

The dentist will examine your teeth one last time before you leave. You may experience some tooth sensitivity after the whitening procedure. Mild to moderate sensitivity is normal. But some patients may report high levels of sensitivity. The dentist will prescribe medication if sensitivity levels are high.

At this stage, your gums should feel normal. If you feel any pain or notice any whitening in your gums, tell the dentist immediately.

Complications from professional teeth whitening are very rare. If all goes well, you’ll be ready to get back on the road. The dentist will tell you how to eat and protect your teeth after the procedure. You can also book a follow-up appointment just in case, but this is not necessarily necessary.

Risks and complications

The professional teeth whitening procedure is known to be a largely risk-free process. Temporary side effects, mainly sensitivity, are common, while lasting or permanent complications are rare. You should be aware of the following side effects of the procedure:

Hypersensitivity

Most patients who undergo professional tooth whitening complain of increased sensitivity afterwards. This usually means that your teeth are sensitive to hot or cold drinks. However, this effect should disappear within a few days of the procedure.

Some patients may experience very high levels of tooth sensitivity. For example, you may feel a slight shock when you drink a hot or cold beverage. This effect can be treated with medication and should disappear within a few days.

You may experience high tooth sensitivity following a teeth whitening procedure if you frequently whiten your teeth. Tell your dentist if you have recently used a bleaching agent on your teeth to make them appear whiter. If you already have sensitive teeth, the procedure may aggravate the situation. Therefore, discuss this complication with your dentist if you are at risk of having sensitive teeth.

Gum irritation

Gum irritation can occur if the whitening agent and laser penetrate the gums. This should not happen if the gum shield is correctly positioned. Some gum irritation problems will disappear on their own. In other cases, the dental surgeon in Turkey may prescribe medication.

Gum inflammation

Although not common, inflammation or swelling of the gums may result from the operation. This is why dentists prescribe anti-inflammatory medication before the operation begins.

Nerve damage

In rare cases, laser treatment can cause nerve damage to the teeth. You may experience this as tooth sensitivity that never goes away. Some high-temperature lasers can increase the risk of nerve damage. This complication is rare, but you can discuss it with your dentist before undergoing the procedure.
