Did you know? Liposuction is the most frequently performedcosmetic surgery operation in the world, just ahead of breast augmentation. And it’s not by chance: for men and women alike, the accumulation of fat in certain areas of the body is often a source of complexes.
Is this the case for you? In this article, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about thigh liposuction in Tunisia.
What is thigh liposuction?
Liposuction or liposuction of the thighs is a relatively common cosmetic surgery operation in Tunisia. As its name suggests, it aims to remove the accumulation of fat from the thighs.
Depending on the patient’s needs and wishes, the operation can be performed at different levels:
- On the inner thighs: it is very common for the skin to form “waves” at this level. After removing the excess fat, a facelift can be performed to tighten the skin.
- On the outside of the thighs, also known as the saddlebags: this is a very frequent request from women, and is an effective way of slimming the figure.
- On the back and front of the thighs: these areas are treated sparingly, as the skin is fragile and not very elastic.
When all these areas are treated in the same operation, we speak of circular liposuction of the thighs. This is performed under general anaesthetic, whereas a local anaesthetic is generally sufficient to treat a single area.
To maintain a harmonious figure, your surgeon may also perform liposuction on the hips, buttocks or knees. He will inform you of this during the pre-operative visit.
Liposuction of the thighs: for whom and why?
Because of hormonal fluctuations and the distribution of fat cells in the buttocks and hips, women are more likely to undergo liposuction of the thighs.
However, more and more men are now turning to this operation in a bid to regain a more harmonious figure.
What’s more, the procedure is often easier with younger patients, since the tissue is firmer and the results more predictable. Older patients can nevertheless achieve excellent results, and many regret not having taken the plunge sooner.
There are two main reasons why you may wish to undergo liposuction of the thighs: the friction of your thighs causes discomfort and leads to irritation, or you simply wish to refine your lower body. In the latter case, it is important to bear in mind that liposuction is not a solution to obesity, but simply a means of reshaping the figure.
Finally, it should be noted that liposuction of the thighs is contraindicated in the following cases:
- pregnant women: it is advisable to postpone the operation until after pregnancy and, if necessary, until after breast-feeding;
- for patients suffering from certain illnesses such as leukaemia or diabetes;
- people with a history of phlebitis or pulmonary embolism.
Other risk factors exist, such as smoking, taking contraceptives or being overweight: all these points will be taken into consideration by your surgeon during the pre-operative visit.
The different stages of the operation
Although many patients travel to Tunisia to take advantage of preferential rates, the procedure for liposuction of the thighs is exactly the same as in Europe.
The pre-operative consultation
As with any surgical operation, you will have an initial consultation with your surgeon to discuss your expectations and your general state of health.
Your doctor will then carry out a detailed examination of your morphology, assessing in particular the elasticity of your skin and theextent of the fat mass to be removed.
Between one month and 48 hours before the operation, you will also meet the anaesthetist to determine the type of anaesthetic best suited to your situation.
If liposuction is to be performed on several areas simultaneously, general anaesthesia will be systematically recommended, making sure that you have no contraindications to this type of procedure.
The course of the operation
Liposuction of the thighs is a relatively short operation, lasting between 1 and 2 hours depending on the extent of the areas to be treated.
It is generally performed on an outpatient basis: the operation is scheduled in the morning and you can return home in the late afternoon. Depending on the amount of fat removed, it may nevertheless be necessary to spend a night at the clinic to monitor any complications.
On the day of the operation, the surgeon will begin by marking out the areas to be suctioned using a special felt-tip pen. You will then be placed under anaesthetic, and tiny 3 or 4 millimetre incisions will be made: these are generally placed in the natural folds of the skin to remain as unobtrusive as possible.
At this stage of the procedure, saline solution is infiltrated under the skin to limit bleeding and facilitate fat extraction.
The fat cells are then suctioned out using foam cannulas: micro-tubes a few millimetres in diameter specially designed to protect the skin and tissues. Inserted through the incisions made at the beginning of the operation, the tubes gradually suck up the fat from the surface and from deep within the body, so as to obtain a homogenous result with no irregularities.
Once the operation is complete, the elasticity of the skin will allow it to tighten naturally. In some cases, however, a facelift may be necessary to firm and tone the thighs.
Finally, the surgeon will fit you with a compression panty (a compression garment). Following liposuction, the fat removed is naturally replaced by body water, leading to swelling. The panty will help to limit this phenomenon, while protecting the operated area.
After the operation
Following the operation, you will feel moderate pain, which can be easily relieved with the painkillers prescribed by your doctor. The next day, you can take a shower while removing the support panty. In general, the panty should be worn for 4 to 6 weeks, while the oedema disappears naturally after 5 to 15 days.
In the first few weeks after the operation, it is often advisable tomassage the thighs. This mechanical action has several advantages. In particular, it helps to :
- promote the elimination of toxins ;
- improve oxygenation of skin tissue;
- improve lymphatic circulation
- reduce swelling;
- reduce pain.
Depending on your wishes and your budget, you can perform the massage yourself on a daily basis or hire a physiotherapist or masseur.
Although the first results of liposuction are visible as soon as the operation is completed, it generally takes several months for the body to recover fully from the operation. By carefully following the advice given by your surgeon, you can expect to see the final results after about 3 or 4 months.
