What is ultrasonic rhinoplasty?

Ultrasound technology has long been used for aesthetic procedures to reduce fat and tighten the skin. Rhinoplasty can now be performed using a piezotome® and ultrasonic waves, making the reshaping of the nasal bones more precise and accurate.

Rhinoplasty is one of the TOP10 cosmetic surgery operations in Turkey. The procedure is suitable for both men and women.

The aim of an ultrasound rhinoplasty is to achieve facial harmony by correcting :

• Nose shape
• Nose angle

The tools used in ultrasonic rhinoplasty are powered by ultrasonic waves that cause the tip of the tool to vibrate, shaving off excess bone.

In traditional rhinoplasty techniques, the bones are aggressively scraped and chiselled away. Thanks to ultrasound technology, even the finest and most fragile bones can be adjusted for a better aesthetic result.

The method

During an ultrasound rhinoplasty, an incision will be made in the columella, directly under the tip of the nose, for better exposure and visualisation of the area to be treated.

The nose will then be retracted backwards, dissecting the nasal cartilage and taking care not to incise the median ridge, the cartilage that separates the nostrils. The skin will be lifted from the nose for maximum exposure. The surgeon can then easily reshape the tip of the nose, the bridge, the nostrils or repair the nasal septum using specialised ultrasonic tools.

Various tools can be used to scrape, shape and smooth the nasal bone. The ultrasound tool provides greater precision and reduces trauma to the surrounding tissue. Once complete, the skin will be re-draped over the bone structure. The incision is closed with stitches and a plaster cast is placed over the nose.

What can you expect?

Developed in 2013 by Paris-based Dr Gerbault, ultrasonic rhinoplasty is performed using specialist tools to reshape the nasal bones to achieve a more refined nose shape. Here’s a quick guide to what to expect before, during and after an ultrasound rhinoplasty.

Before treatment

• Do not take any medication for 2 weeks to purify the blood;
• Do not smoke for 2 weeks before and after the operation;
• Do not expose yourself to the sun for 2 weeks before the operation;
• Do not eat or drink anything for 6 hours before the operation.

During the operation

• General or local anaesthetic with sedation
• Incision made under the tip of the nose
• The nose is retracted backwards
• The skin is raised for maximum exposure
• The nasal bridge is reshaped and refined using specialised tools that vibrate thanks to ultrasonic waves
• Stitches to close incisions
• An external splint or cast is placed over the nose

Immediately after treatment

• Swelling around the nose, cheeks and eyes
• Bruising and swelling of the face.

1 to 2 weeks after treatment

• Swelling and bruising still present
• Do not blow your nose for 2 weeks
• Keep the inside of the nose moist with a nasal spray
• Special diet.

3 weeks after treatment and beyond

• Avoid strenuous exercise for 3 weeks
• Avoid sun exposure for 6 weeks.

Final result

• Permanent
• Up to 1 year for the final shape

Important notes

As an open rhinoplasty technique is used during ultrasound rhinoplasty surgery, there is likely to be significant facial swelling and bruising. An external splint will be applied for a week after surgery to support the underlying nasal structure.

While the surrounding facial swelling will resolve after 1-2 weeks, the nasal swelling will last for up to 1 month. The nose will continue to heal for 1 to 1? years. Make-up can be worn as soon as the cast is removed.

Ideal candidate

The ideal candidate for ultrasound rhinoplasty has a nasal hump and a deformity on the bridge of the nose. Please note that people with HIV are all accepted.

Not recommended for…

Ultrasonic rhinoplasty is not recommended for under-18s, unless it is to correct an injury. Ultrasonic rhinoplasty may not be suitable for patients with significant bone deformities, as it takes longer to reshape the bone than traditional methods.

Risks, complications and side effects

There may be some rare risks associated with ultrasonic rhinoplasty:

• Temporary loss of sense of smell ;
• Accumulation of blood under the skin;
• Tissue necrosis;
• Perforation of the nasal septum;
• Nasal dryness;
• Problems with the respiratory tract.
